          Sport Science

Sport Science encompasses a number of different disciplines including strength and conditioning, sport medicine, biomechanics, motor learning, sport psychology, nutrition and exercise physiology.  All of the sport sciences play a large part in the development of a successful tennis player.  Listed below are overviews of each of the areas in this section:

          Strength and Conditioning

Focuses on tennis-specific strength training programs for injury prevention, on the road training and age-appropriate programs for young players.

          Sports Medicine

Includes the treatment and prevention of athletic injuries and rehabilitation.

          Biomechanics and Technique

Deals with the analysis of human movements and forces, including the analysis of proper and improper stroke mechanics.

          Growth, Development and Motor Learning

Focuses on movement behavior as a result of practice or experience and deals with the process by which the human body learns movements and both basic and complex tasks.

          Sport Psychology

Deals with the mental side of tennis and encompasses the study of human behavior within the setting of sport.

          Nutrition

The study of the utilization of food substances during physical activity.

          Physiology

Deals with the study of how the systems of the body function and specifically adapt during exercise.

          Ask the Lab

From low-carb diets to strength training, you can find the answers in USTA.com's Ask the Lab column. Search the categories to find answers in our various knowledge areas. And, of course, feel free to submit your own questions, as well.

          Events

Dates for upcoming sport science events from the USTA and other educational providers will be announced soon.

          Sports Science Commitee

The USTA Sport Science Committee is comprised of 16 members who in many cases are both experts and world leaders within their respective areas of sport science.

          Tennis Recovery

The Tennis Recovery project is a 400 page document written by members of the USTA Sport Science Committee to provide some guidance on how tennis players should be recovering from training and competition with a specific focus on reducing the likelihood of injury as well as improving performance, health and safety.
